Teacher-Coaches
UDL
Teacher-Coaches play a central role in the development and success
of a league. The Coach is instrumental in helping make the necessary
connections between league resources and school administrations.
It has been proven in other UDL's that debate experience is not
a necessary requirement of the Coach, and the Providence UDL stands
by this notion. The Coach is primarily responsible for establishing
and maintaining a general sense of enthusiasm and pride with high
school debaters.
What does the UDL offer our Teacher Coaches?
- Consistent and thorough Professional Development, offered through
the Institute for Elementary and Secondary Education at Brown
for the receipt of RI Department of Education Credits.
- A diverse community of high school teachers, administrators,
and college faculty and staff for the exchange of ideas and classroom
techniques.
- Fully funded travel to National UDL conferences and events to
network with colleagues from cities across the United States.
- Scholarships to attend summer debate institutes.
- Weekly coaching assistants, curriculum guides, and other teaching
resource materials.
What are the commitments of a Debate Coach?
- Schedule and facilitate regular meetings for debate squad practices
(1-3 afternoons per week)
- Indicate and communicate areas of needed training and professional
development to league administration.
- Work with volunteer coaching assistants to plan squad practices
and assessing the progress of debating teams.
- Attend tournaments and special events to Judge and/or assist
in event administration.
- Attend coaching seminars and league training workshops in order
to receive professional development credits through the Institute
for Elementary and Secondary Education at Brown University.
- To recruit debaters and monitor level of student participation.
Other Tasks:
- To work with League administration and other coaches on collaborative
league building initiatives.
- To attend summer debate institutes and seek scholarships for
self and high school debaters.
- To communicate with high school principals the progress of the
team and league.
- To publicize special events and tournaments to school community
and community-at-large.
