Coaching Assistants

Coaching Assistants, work collaboratively, as university volunteers, with assigned teacher coaches and squads to build a strong debate presence in each school with the Rhode Island Debate League and to assist the league administration in three day-long tournaments per semester.

The college Coaching Assistants provide leadership for:

Teacher & School Support (6 Hours/Week)

  • Work with student debate participants in small group to develop argumentation, research, public speaking and analytical skills.
  • Regularly attend practices at their assigned school.
  • Act as an assistant to the teacher coach during the practice session.
  • Hold regular joint lesson planning sessions with the teacher coach at their site.
  • Communicate with the teacher coaches in advance of inability to attend a practice.
  • Communicate with staff regarding the needs and progress at their site.
  • Deliver necessary evidence and curricular materials to their school site as needed.

League Support & Administration (27 Hours/Semester)

  • Act as a resource for other mentors in their school and throughout the League.
  • Serve as a judge and/or assist in the administration of all League tournaments.
  • Attend periodic training and planning sessions for all college student mentors.
  • Complete regular brief written evaluations.
  • Participate in the development and administration fo the League as necessary.
